What Does It Mean to Be Happy and Healthy in Midlife?
To me, happiness is the spontaneous fulfillment of desire. It’s having the energy and freedom to do what you love—whether that’s enjoying a nourishing meal with friends, moving your body with ease, or resting deeply at night.
But happiness also means having resilience when things don’t go your way. It means staying gracious, flexible, and peaceful in the face of change. That’s a skill we can develop—and it’s also a form of strength.
Why Bone Health Matters More Than Ever
Many women are told they have “osteopenia” or “osteoporosis” as they enter midlife—but very few are told what that actually means or how to take action. Here’s the truth:
- Osteopenia is not a true medical diagnosis—it simply refers to a slightly lower bone density score and does not predict fracture risk.
- Osteoporosis occurs when bones become so weak they can no longer handle the stress of daily life.
But here’s the hopeful part: Your body is designed to build bone—naturally. And it will, when you give it the right support.
The Role of Exercise: Your Strongest Signal to Nature
Exercise isn’t just good for your heart and mood—it’s essential for bone. Why? Because:
The body won’t build bone unless it knows it needs to.
When you challenge your muscles, you pull on the bones—and that mechanical stress signals your body to create more bone mass.
Whether it’s strength training (like squats, deadlifts, or farmer’s carries), mindful movement (like yoga or Tai Chi), or simply getting up and walking daily—movement is the message your body needs.
In fact, studies show that even yoga practiced five days a week can improve bone density, balance, and reduce fracture risk.
The Power of pH Balance
At the core of my work is the idea that an alkaline diet creates an environment for healing and rebuilding. Our bodies are under constant stress from acid-forming foods and environmental toxins. To keep your blood pH stable, your body often pulls minerals from your bones—weakening them over time.
Eating more vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices gives your body the minerals it needs to stay alkaline and preserve bone mass.
Bonus tip: You can measure your own first-morning urine pH to track your progress. (Yes—we have a kit for that!)
Building Muscle = Building Bone
Here’s a fact that often surprises people:
The average person loses 45% of their muscle and bone between ages 35 and 85.
And guess what? They go down together. That’s why it’s so important to protect your muscle mass—because it helps buffer acid, supports your bones, and protects against falls (which are the #1 cause of fractures).
Muscle acts as a buffer against acid stress too. It holds reserves like glutamine that the body can call on in a pinch. That’s another reason to preserve and nourish your muscle tissue with strength-building activities, quality protein, and mineral-rich foods.
